Which Medical Devices use Miniature Radial Blowers?

Miniature radial blowers are used within many different Medical Devices. Ranging from CPAP, surgical smoke evacuation, low air loss pressure care mattress inflation and more. In this article we will cover three of the common medical devices utilising radial blowers and how the blower designs are tailored specifically for these applications.

CPAP

Bedside devices such as CPAP machines use radial blowers to generate airflow, blowing the pressurised air into a patient’s nose or mouth, keeping the upper airway open and ensuring ease of breathing during sleep. The design focus for a CPAP device is for minimal noise and vibration, to ensure maximum patient comfort avoiding any disturbance during nighttime, whilst offering sufficient airflow delivery. A key focus is also to reduce the blower cost in a competitive market, whilst ensuring high quality and reliability. Steady Motor blower WM6850-24V has been designed exactly for this purpose, with <27dBa measured in device and very competitive pricing. Learn more about our silent CPAP blower.

Surgical Smoke Evacuation

During some surgical procedures, such as electrosurgery, the energy for used cutting or coagulating tissue results in smoke being generated. Inhaling this smoke is potentially harmful, due to its composition of chemicals, biological agents and particles. Therefore, it is essential it is removed from the operating area to ensure the health and wellbeing of the patient and surgeons.

An effective way to do this is through a surgical smoke evacuation device. This device generates suction, pulling the smoke through the surgeon’s hand piece and through a filter that can be safely disposed of. In order to achieve sufficient suction to remove the smoke, a high-pressure radial blower is required, used to overcome the resistance from the narrow tubing and filter. Steady Motor blower WM7095-24V has been designed for this purpose with a dual impeller, resulting in 50% higher pressure/vacuum. Learn more about high pressure radial blowers.

Pressure Care Mattress Inflation – Low Air Loss

For immobilised patients, pressure care mattresses are used to alternate pressure on different parts of the body, to prevent pressure ulcers (bedsores). For typical pressure care mattresses, with sealed air cells, compressors are often used for high pressure and low flow inflation. Newer and high-quality pressure care mattresses also have a low air loss feature. The cells of the low air loss mattress are perforated with many tiny holes, which allow the airflow to assist in climate control for the patient and further reduce risk of pressure ulcers by regulating skin temperature and preventing heat and humidity. Due to the perforation of the cells and the resulting air loss, a higher airflow radial blower is required, to generate the airflow and pressure required for cell inflation and to compensate for the low air loss. Steady Motor blower WM9275-24V offers exceptional levels of airflow and pressure, with quiet and reliable operation. Learn more about our  quiet and reliable radial blowers.
